Chemical profile of Plomin Bay sediments.

چکیده
Granulometric, chemical, and leaching properties of sediments dredged in the Plomin Bay (Northern Adriatic Sea, Croatia) were investigated in order to asses the risk of remobilisation of heavy metals into the water column. In total 65 samples from 65 sampling sites were taken from different sediment depths within the bay. Analysis of variance confirmed the homogeneity of granulometric and elemental composition of the investigated sediment throughout its volume. Granulometric analysis showed that all samples corresponded to a pelitic fraction (<0.063 mm). Bulk elemental mass fractions in the sediments were similar to literature data on relatively unpolluted areas of the Adriatic Sea. High sedimentation rate caused by constant inflow of material from the Boljuncica River drainage may be responsible for low levels of heavy metals and negligible influence of fly and bottom ash from a nearby disposal site on the chemical composition of the sediments. In contact with sea water only 0.29 mg kg-1 of V, 0.04 mg kg-1 of Cr, 0.07 mg kg-1 of Ni, 0.33 mg kg-1 of Cu, 0.67 mg kg-1 of Zn and 0.06 mg kg-1 of Pb could be remobilised from sediment material into the water column. However, these values increased three to ten times in case of leaching with organic acids.

Cd and Pb Concentrations in the Surface Sediments of the Asaluyeh Bay, Iran
Introduction: Heavy metals widely used in the industrial and refining activities are frequently detected in sediments. The main objectives of this research were focused on determining the concentration of Cd and Pb in the sediments of Asaluyeh and compare with the standard. Methods: The concentration of Pb and Cd in the sediments of Nayband Bay area (contaminated area) and Lavar-e Saheli (cont...
متن کاملLevels of heavy metals in sediments in the vicinity of Chabahar Bay desalination plant
Desalination plants are potentially capable of having impacts on coastal marine environments due to the production of wastewater with high concentrations of salts (brine discharge) and some heavy metals. The aim of this study was to examine the concentration of accumulated metals (Ni, Cu, Cd, Fe, Zn, Pb) in the sediments near the brine discharge point in the Chabahar Bay. Twenty one sediment sa...
متن کاملHeavy metal concentrations in different tissues of Euryglossa orientalis, Chirocentrus nudus and sediments in Bahrekan Bay (the northwest of Persian Gulf)
Concentrations of Ni, V, Pb and Cu were determined in bottom sediments and liver, gills and fillet of Euryglossa orientalis and Chirocentrus nudus along the Bahrekan Bay in the Northwest part of the Persian Gulf in Iran. Sediment samples and fish species were collected during winter 2013 and spring 2014. Heavy metal analysis was performed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results showed t...

متن کاملMercury and Radionuclides in Sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (Croatia) – Evaluation of the Sediment Pollution History*
Mercury and radionuclides (natural U and its decay series products and artificial 137Cs) were measured in sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (eastern Adriatic coast) in the vicinity of a former chloralkali plant. The depth distributions of radionuclides and mercury revealed that sediments in front of the factory represent a mixture of natural sediment and coal ash originating from the coal used in th...
